NETWORK ON COASTAL, OCEANS AND LAKE OPTICS REMOTE SENSING

ABOUT NetCOLOR

NetCOLOR is a network of Canadian experts and end-users specializing in aquatic color remote sensing. Established in 2014 with funding from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), NetCOLOR has been supported by MEOPAR as a Community of Practice (CoP) since 2019. Its primary mission is to foster collaboration among researchers and professionals in aquatic remote sensing, creating a unified center of expertise through the development of a national strategy for research, training, and dissemination of water color products. The network's key objectives include:

  • Reviewing the status of current and future international ocean color missions to assess the availability of relevant data for Canadian scientists.
  • Identifying opportunities for Canadian contributions to space missions and the development of technologies for ocean color data utilization, supporting the CSA Space Utilization Roadmap.
  • Developing a national strategy to address evolving Canadian user needs.
  • Recognizing and strengthening Canadian technological capabilities.
  • Defining national research priorities in ocean color remote sensing.
  • Enhancing collaboration between academic, private, and government sectors by building an active network of Canadian ocean color experts engaged in multi-institutional research initiatives.
SOCIAL BENEFITS OF OCEAN COLOR RADIOMETRY

Aligned with the Oceans Act, NetCOLOR plays a crucial role in reaffirming Canada’s leadership in ocean and marine resource management. It promotes a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and aquatic processes while supporting the sustainable development of ocean resources.

NetCOLOR strengthens collaboration between government agencies and university-based aquatic remote sensing (AOR) researchers. These collective efforts contribute to the planning of future AOR missions and the consolidation of data in accessible formats for end-users. Such applications include fisheries, aquaculture, marine ecosystem research, freshwater quality assessment, and climate change modeling. Strengthened cooperation among Canadian laboratories is expected to drive further research using satellite AOR radiometry, reinforcing Canada's position at the forefront of AOR advancements.
